Milo Marathon Registration Center Opens at the Civic Center

The Roxas City Leg of the 31st National MILO Marathon on August 26, 2007 kicks off with the opening of the Registration Center at the Dinggoy Roxas Civic Center. The heat is on for this leg of the race with some 2,800 runners signing up on the first day of registration.

Registration will continue daily from 8 am to 5 pm until Wednesday, August 22. To join the marathon, interested participants will only have to fill up a registration form and submit this along with one (1) MILO label (minimum of 3oo grams).

The Roxas City Leg of the marathon is being organized locally by the Rotary Club of Roxas. For more information on the marathon, you can visit http://www.nestle.com.ph/milo/index.htm

Past District Governor Phil Abello, et al… ladies and gentlemen, your presence tonight is an essential first step to Make dreams real for our children and our children’s children…

Allow me to reminisce the first time I came close to a Rotary Club. It was during a Rotary sponsored oratorical contest when I was in third year high school in Iloilo, not too long ago. The theme was “the four-way test: the bedrock of people power”. I got to win third place, but what hit me particularly was the wisdom behind the four-way test, which until now I can manage to recite with eyes closed: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned?, will it bring goodwill and better friendships?, will it be beneficial to all concerned?. How else could somebody go wrong if for every time he speaks or does something, he has the Rotary’s four way test in mind?

From that day onwards, I knew I will be a Rotary Club member when I grow up, and here I am, speaking in front of you as president of the Rotary Club of Roxas. –A dream made real.

Thus I would like to share this fulfillment of my own personal dream to benefit all those concerned, particularly the children, and in the process build friendships and goodwill.

This Rotary Year ushers a year of making dreams real for the world’s children. President Dong Kurn Lee has extended this emphasis to five different aspects: health and hunger, literacy, public image, water, and youth services.

Malnutrition, pregnancy related complications, lack of access to essential health services are robbing families of their loved ones, depriving communities of valuable human resource, and sifting their already destitute economy. These problems are mostly preventable and can be addressed by providing efficient and accessible health care, affordable medicines, proper health education and sanitation.

Inability to read and write and lack of proper education makes people vulnerable to sickness, malnutrition and extreme poverty. Education of would-be mothers and caregivers are essential to lower incidences of infant mortalities and better equip them of rearing their children and future families.

Lack of access to safe, clean and potable water contributes to exacerbation of water-borne illnesses particularly in children. Again, this problem is preventable and could be addressed accordingly.

The children and youth are future leaders of our nations. And just like myself, a few years back, I was looking for a way to make a difference in my own community. The Rotary club is the proper venue to develop characters and leadership abilities while at the same time being guided by the club’s high ethical standards and ideals of service and social responsibility.

The Rotary Club of Roxas accepts DK Lee’s Challenge 101% and I am confident that we will live up to District Governor Emma Nava’s call for literacy and youth involvement.

The recent turn of events brought by the super typhoon have proven the selfless dedication and sincerity of each members of the club in extending assistance to those who needed most. The past few days were extraordinary expressions of unselfish volunteer service, a true mark of Rotary, that is to serve above self.

Just before the start of this term, the club has conducted three club assemblies to address the different aspects of realizing the Rotary Years theme. A comprehensive plan for the lone island barangay of the city is on the planning phase. It is entitled PISO(Project Island: Sustainable Olotayan), through which the club hopes to assist in establishing a functional health center, a barangay run pharmacy, a dedicated health worker and a water ambulance; the club also would like to further the marine conservation efforts of the city by providing perimeter buoys and establishing artificial reefs while maintaining the mangrove reforestation efforts in punta cogon; in terms of literacy, the club also envisions to help the barangay finish the infrastructures for the day care center, help establish a functional daycare center by assisting in educational activities and health education just like what we are doing in barangay baybay; the club also envisions of facilitating solar power provisions in the island in lieu of the fuel run generators.

The club also wishes to equip the 187 midwives of the province with proper education on neonatal resuscitation; promote an environment that is safe for kids and provide venues for adolescents and young adults for opportunities to develop leadership skills and guidance for vocations.

These and the continuing activities of the Rotary Club of Roxas are our answer in fulfilling our dreams and aspirations for our children. Together with a dedicated and socially responsible membership, I am certain that we will Make Dreams Real…
