1500 Mangrove Seedlings Handed Over to Cooperator Families for Planting

The Rotary Club of Roxas handed over 1500 Piyapi seedlings to the six cooperator families of the Mangrove Greenbelt Project last March 16, 2008. This was done after the 1.7 hectare deforested mangrove area was subdivided among the cooperator families last week. Each family is expected to plant and take care of 500 mangroves each month. The mangrove seedlings were bought from the Municipal Agriculture Office of President Roxas, Capiz through the initiatives of Rotarian and US Peace Corp Volunteer Anna Moyer, a member of the RC Roxas Special Committee on Environment.

With the beginning of the summer season, the special committee on

Environment is expecting a kick-off for the Mangrove Greenbelt Project which had previous unsuccessful attempts at replanting due to the stormy seasons.

The Mangrove Greenbelt Project is President Rommel Lastimoso’s flagship project which will hopefully bag an award as outstanding community project in this year’s District Conference.

PP Mel Deslate Is Incoming Assistant District Governor for District 3850 Zone IV

Leading President Dr. Carmelo D. Deslate was chosen by Incoming District Governor Emma Nava to represent her in District 3850 Zone IV. PP Mel is this year’s Zone IV Assistant Governor, a great honor to the Rotary Club of Roxas

PP Mel was president for Rotary Year 2006-2007 and was awarded a Presidential Citation for “leading the way” for RC Roxas. It was during PP Mel’s term that the Mangrove Greenbelt Project was launched which was later adopted by President Rommel Lastimoso as its flagship project for the current Rotary Year.

As Assistant Governor, PP Mel will be overseeing the Rotary Clubs of Capiz and Kalibo, a feat that can only be fathomed by a rabid Rotarian like Dr. Mel Deslate.

PESETS Held at Iloilo Business Hotel

The President Elect and Secretary Elect Training Seminar (PESETS) was held recently at the Iloilo Business Hotel last March 8, 2008 for the 54 presidents-elect and secretaries-elect of District 3850 Zones 1 to 11.

The training seminar started at 9 AM and ended around 6 PM. It was a full day of Rotary information with emphasis on the priorities and thrust of the RI presidency.

Ms. Dele Riley, the Rotary International coordinator for Club and District support for South Pacific and Philippines Offices in PARAMATTA Australia was present to talk on the different matters with regards to club adm

Several Past District Governors were also present to discuss on goal settings and the different avenues of service.

A “heated” discussion arose during the discussions on the service projects by PP Louie Gonzaga of RC Iloilo-South since he presented literacy programs which representatives from RC Roxas, PE Pip and SE Raoul and PE Megs of RC Kalibo thought were totally divergent from the thrust of RI PE DK Lee.

The incoming RI President specifically stressed his intentions of reducing child mortality through health, water, and literacy as the focus of his presidency. Thus, objections were raised regarding the district’s direction with regards to literacy since “giving books and computers to school children” will definitely not reduce child mortality. Instead, it was proposed that the literacy part should be directed to the parents and caregivers.

RC Roxas has also made its presence felt with PE Pip winning the contest on the most numbers of incoming presidents met and interviewed.

A loud applause was heard when PE Pip presented the worksheet on goal-setting as well as the secret to achieving an 83.3% membership increase for the year. However, this was shortlived when RC Dumangas announced a 140% increase in their membership for the current year.

The PESETS was hosted by RC Iloilo-South.

Fellowship followed at Freshka sponsored by IDG Emma Nava and after dinner coffee was sponsored by PDG Toto Locsin at nearby Blue Jay Café.

Feng Shui Authority Shares Expertise to RC Roxas

Businessman Mr. Carlos Ezpeleta and daughters were guests during the clubs regular meeting last February 26 at the Rotary Center. Mr. Ezpeleta was invited to lecture on the Chinese ancient art of Feng Shui, a complex body of knowledge that reveals many ways to balance the energies of your environment to assure health, wealth and good fortune.

Mr. Ezpeleta related that the Rotary Center exudes a positive aura especially since it is located on a hilly area, a sign of power and progress. He, however suggested that the position of the rostrum and the presiding officer be elevated to about four inches high in order to encourage a more positive energy.

Every month, RC Roxas will be having at least one lecture on interesting topics aside from the usual Rotary education and career information.
