RC Roxas Met With Roxas City Business Sector to Discuss Prospects of Ecotourism Projects

RC Roxas participated in the joint meeting of the Roxas Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Capiz Halaran Chamber of Commerce on October 4, 2007 at the Red Sun Restaurant, Gaisano Arcade. The meeting was conducted to discuss the prospects of boosting the city’s tourism industry by capitalizing on eco-tourism. The meeting was also participated in by members of the local government units headed by Mayor Dante Bermejo of Panay, Provincial Administrator Zoe Herrera, City Tourism Officer Al Tesoro, Mr. Vincent Bermejo representing the City Mayor.

Rotarian Powell del Rosario, chair for special projects on environment and president of Save Olotayan Foundation, Inc., discussed the ongoing Mangrove Greenbelt Project at Barangay Punta Cogon and the proposed Olotayan Environmental Tour Package. He, together with Rotarian Ana Moyer and Secretary Pip Acepcion, emphasized the importance of mangrove reforestation not only as a future tourist destination but also as a source of livelihood and a means to preserve marine life.

Rotarian Chad del Rosario also related the importance of defining the City border with neighboring Masbate since areas such as Sapatos Gamay, an uninhabited island about 45 minutes off Olotayan island, has excellent area for diving. If no immediate attention is given, the now thriving marine life would end up deserted because of dynamite and cyanide fishing.
